Knighthood for Bristol volcanologist in New Year Honours list 30 December 2017 Professor Stephen Sparks FRS CBE from the University of Bristol has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

Knighthood for Emeritus Professor of Mathematics 30 December 2017 Bernard Silverman, Emeritus Henry Overton Wills Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bristol and lately Chief Scientific Adviser to the Թ Office, has been knighted in the New Year Honours List 2018 for public service and services to Science.

4G network infrastructure could mean fewer accidents by drivers 13 January 2017 New research that suggests a pre-existing 4G network infrastructure could help drivers make safe decisions in or near accidents has won the ‘Best Paper Award’ at an international conference.

New trial to assess whether rapid tests reduce antibiotic prescribing for respiratory infections in primary care 23 November 2022 A new randomised controlled clinical trial, led by the University of Bristol, will investigate whether rapid microbiological 'point-of-care' tests for respiratory infections could reduce antibiotic prescribing in primary care, thanks to funding of £1.6 million by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The tests, which are carried out in GP surgeries rather than sent to a laboratory, detect the presence of viruses and some bacteria, with results available on the same day.

Around nine million Euros in ERC grants awarded to Bristol academics for pioneering research 22 November 2022 A total of six researchers from the University of Bristol have been awarded European Research Council (ERC) Grants totalling around 1.5 million Euros each. This places the University joint second in the UK in terms of the number of Grants awarded from the 2022 call.

The "ship of the desert" 18 December 2017 Academics at the University of Bristol will investigate how the one-humped Arabian camel can thrive in the hot and dry environment of the desert, where water is scarce, thanks to a grant from the Leverhulme Trust. Working with scientists in North Africa and the Middle East they hope to better understand how animals can adapt to deserts and climate change.
