  • The brain under pressure: Bristol Neuroscience attracts BBSRC grant 23 July 2008 The BBSRC has awarded a grant of over £0.5 million to an interdisciplinary team, formed via Bristol Neuroscience, researching into the behaviour of brain cells during periods of acute stress.
  • Prestigious new grant for volcano research 27 August 2008 Professor Steve Sparks is to receive an ERC Advanced Grant for a study of volcanoes and their environmental and social impact.
  • Diabetes research wins RCGP and Novartis Research Paper of the Year 19 June 2012 Dr Rob Andrews, Consultant Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical Sciences, is the lead author of a study that has won national recognition through the 2011 RCGP (Royal College of General Practitioners) and Novartis Research Paper of the Year Award.
  • Earth Sciences scores record number of NERC Advanced Fellowships 28 May 2008 The Department of Earth Sciences has secured three prestigious Advanced Fellowships worth a total of £1.7 million in the National Environment Research Council’s (NERC) latest funding round.
  • New £6.6m Clinical Research and Imaging Centre for Bristol 21 May 2008 The University and United Bristol Healthcare Trust (UBHT) are joining forces to establish a new state-of-the-art Clinical Research and Imaging Centre (CRIC) at St Michael’s Hospital on St Michael’s Hill in Bristol. This unique collaboration will allow people in Bristol and the South West to benefit from the latest, high-quality, cutting-edge research being conducted locally.
  • New research aims to eliminate Streptococcus infections 6 March 2008 Professor Howard Jenkinson in the Department of Oral & Dental Science (Dental School) has been awarded a grant of £285,000 from The Wellcome Trust to research ways to combat diseases caused by Streptococcus bacteria.
  • Garden History blooms ³Ô¹ÏÍø 20 May 2008 Florence Clarke, Foreign Language Assistant Tutor in the Department of French and a student on the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology’s Garden History MA course, is the winner of the 2008 Garden History Society (GHS) Annual Essay prize.
  • NVQ first for Animal Technicians 31 March 2008 Two members of staff in the Animal Service Unit (ASU) were recently each awarded an NVQ level 3 in Animal Technology. Lionel Wheeler and Anne Cornish, both Animal Technicians based in the ASU, are the first people in the country to achieve this qualification.
  • Leverhulme Prizes for Bristol mathematicians 18 November 2008 Two academics in the Department of Mathematics have been awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize.
  • Children of the 90s Scientific Director elected to US academy 13 October 2008 George Davey Smith, Scientific Director of Bristol University’s Children of the 90s study and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Social Medicine has been elected a Foreign Associate of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in the US.
