Two Bristol teams win prizes at BrisSynBio 4-Day MBA 23 April 2018 Vitamica, Imophoron and Exom Biotechnologies were all awarded a share of £10,000 in prizes during the BrisSynBio Connect event, which was the finale of the 4-Day MBA to develop new synthetic biology business ideas.

UK’s leading surgeons mark official launch of £21m NIHR Biomedical Research Centre 1 February 2018 Almost a third of hospital admissions involve a surgical procedure and with 4.7 million operations carried out in the UK each year and numbers rising year on year, surgery is one of the most important life-saving treatments offered to patients. Innovative surgical procedures are continually being developed but how are they tested to ensure they are safe? Two of the UK’s leading academic surgeons will answer these questions at a public lecture and debate on Thursday 1 February 2018 to mark the official launch of the £21 million National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

Bristol Professor awarded £1.5 million to look deeper into our cell’s quality control mechanism 24 May 2018 Professor Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel from the School of Biochemistry has won a £1.5 million Wellcome Trust Investigator Award in Science Application to study an essential quality control mechanism in our cells. The mechanism, known as ‘nonsense-mediated mRNA decay’ (NMD) is of fundamental importance for cellular function in health and disease.

Bristol primary health care professor awarded NIHR award 20 November 2023 A University of Bristol professor of primary care and GP is one of six researchers to have been awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research Professorship. Professor Matthew Ridd, from Bristol’s Centre for Academic Primary Care, will carry out research to treat eczema in children and identify and address children’s food allergies.

Bath geriatrician leads £2.1m trial into Parkinson’s disease at the University of Bristol 24 May 2018 A UK-wide trial into Parkinson’s disease led by Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Bristol is set to go ahead, thanks to a £2.1 million grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
