Medical student wins poster presentation at international meningitis conference 18 November 2013 Tomos Edwards, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Bristol, was awarded first prize for his poster presentation on ‘The Orthopaedic Sequelae of Childhood Meningococcal Septicaemia’ at the recent Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) conference ‘Meningitis and Septicaemia in Children and Adults 2013’.

£1.8million for new research on Italian cultures and the study of Modern Languages 18 September 2013 A new research project looking at how modern Italian culture has developed around the world has been awarded £1.8million by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). From the insights it develops into transnational Italian cultures, the project will forge a new framework for the discipline of Modern Languages as a whole.

£1.1M for study into how ‘acetylcholine’ influences brain network activity 15 November 2013 A £1.1 million grant to understand how one of the brain’s key neurotransmitters called ‘acetylcholine’ influences brain activity has been awarded to University of Bristol researchers. The Wellcome Trust award will help scientists understand more precisely how the release of acetylcholine is changing brain cell activity to influence memory and cognition.

Bristol awarded its first Wellcome and NIH PhD studentship 23 August 2013 The Wellcome Trust and the US National Institutes of Health have awarded a four-year PhD studentship to Mahsa Samadi, for a joint project with Professor Zafar Bashir ³Ô¹ÏÍø and Dr Serena Dudek in the US.

Archaeology meets art in Anglesey 9 September 2013 A University of Bristol and Welsh Rock Art Organisation (WRAO) art/archaeology project inspired by Neolithic rock engravings in North Wales has received funding under the European GestArt Project (GESTART - Artistic Gestures revisiting European Artistic Diversity and Convergence).

Double honours for animal welfare expert 23 July 2013 John Webster, Emeritus Professor in Animal Husbandry, from the School of Veterinary Sciences, has been recognised for his outstanding work promoting animal welfare and has been awarded an honorary degree by the Royal Veterinary College.
