Grants and awards

  • Emeritus Professor awarded Royal Society’s 2013 Royal Medal 23 July 2013 Emeritus Professor Peter Wells CBE FRS, from the School of Clinical Sciences, has been awarded the Royal Society’s 2013 Royal Medal for interdisciplinary sciences.
  • Knighthood for University of Bristol Vice-Chancellor 15 June 2013 Professor Eric Thomas, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol, has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The honour was announced today [15 June], with Sir Eric being appointed a Knight Bachelor for his services to higher education.
  • Fulbright Award for Bristol PhD 12 August 2013 Anna Long, a recently graduated PhD student from the University of Bristol, has received a prestigious Fulbright-Diabetes UK Research Award.
  • New £1.2 million research project to make robots more trustworthy 2 July 2013 Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is part of a new £1.2million project which aims to ensure future robotic systems can be trusted by humans. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is funding the three-and-a-half-year project, which will explore how robots can interact with humans in a safe and trustworthy manner.
  • Local health research to benefit from national investment to tackle major health challenges 9 August 2013 Health researchers in the West Country have been given a share of £124 million from the Government to enable them to tackle the area’s most pressing health problems.
  • PhD student wins award for uranium research 13 June 2013 Camilla Stitt, a PhD student from the Interface Analysis Centre, has been awarded the 2013 43èmes Journées des Actinides Research medal for her research in the field of actinide physics and chemistry.
  • Geography professor receives double honours in a single week 13 June 2013 Professor Kelvyn Jones, from the School of Geographical Sciences, has received two prestigious awards in a single week.
  • Launch of world-leading power electronics research centre 1 July 2013 A Centre for Power Electronics that will focus on delivering the underpinning science and engineering behind many low carbon technologies from electric vehicles to renewable energy generation and distribution has been launched thanks to funding of £18 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
  • £1.3m to study how animals initiate locomotion 22 November 2013 A £1.3 million grant to understand how the brain makes the decision to start locomotion has been awarded to University of Bristol researchers by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
  • Bristol engineers take the lead again 15 October 2013 Following on from previous years’ successes, six engineering students from the University of Bristol have been selected as ‘inspirational role models to the next generation of engineers’ by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
