  • Special presentation day marks medal tribute from the Queen 30 November 2012 Two long-serving members of staff at the University of Bristol have been presented with a British Empire Medal - a special accolade bestowed on them by the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
  • Innovation award for iPhone app that helps people manage chronic condition 30 November 2012 An iPhone application developed to help patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME (CFS/ME) has won a top award for its use of innovative technology. ActiveME©, developed by experts in the field of CFS/ME, was designed to assist patients in keeping track of their activity levels, a key part of rehabilitation and self-managing this chronic condition. The free interactive patient-centred tool won the ‘Innovation in Technology’ category at the NHS Innovations North Bright Ideas awards ceremony [29 Nov 2012].
  • Cabot Institute Director wins Lloyds Science of Risk Prize 30 November 2012 Professor Paul Bates from the University of Bristol has won this year's Lloyd’s Science of Risk Prize in the category of Natural Hazards for his work on flood modelling. He is also co-author of the winning entry for the prize's other category, Climate Change.
  • How does our brain “learn” from stressful events? 9 January 2013 A study by academics in the University of Bristol's School of Clinical Sciences that aims to investigate how the brain processes stress and creates memories of psychologically stressful events will begin shortly thanks to funding of £758,000 from the BBSRC.
  • Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award for Bristol professor 8 February 2013 The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, has named Professor Philip Donoghue of the School of Earth Sciences as one of 25 new Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holders.
  • Dr Tasker receives Petplan Charitable Trust Research Award 10 April 2013 Dr Séverine Tasker from the Bristol Veterinary School has become the 2013 recipient of the Petplan Charitable Trust Research Award, which recognises a person, or team, who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of veterinary research.
  • Could a common blood pressure drug slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s? 5 March 2013 A groundbreaking trial that hopes to discover if a drug commonly used to treat high blood pressure could slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) will begin shortly thanks to funding of nearly £2 million by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and managed by the National Institute for Health Research.
  • EPSRC grant for renewable energy project 21 June 2013 A project pursuing new approaches to harvesting thermal energy using nanodiamond has been awarded funding by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
  • Bristol’s School of Chemistry scoops five RSC awards 29 April 2013 Four academics in Bristol’s School of Chemistry have received individual prizes from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and a project involving academics from the Schools of Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Biochemistry has picked up a fifth award for 'world-leading collaborative research'.
  • Bristol neuroscientists receive two major funding awards 19 June 2013 Professors David Murphy, from Bristol Neuroscience, and Julian Paton, from of the School of Physiology and Pharmacology, have been awarded two of six research grants funded under a collaborative scheme by Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).
