  • Bristol academics win Wolfson Merit awards 13 September 2011 Two Bristol academics, in Chemistry and Earth Sciences, respectively, have won coveted Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Awards in the latest funding round.
  • How does our brain “learn” from stressful events? 9 January 2013 A study by academics in the University of Bristol's School of Clinical Sciences that aims to investigate how the brain processes stress and creates memories of psychologically stressful events will begin shortly thanks to funding of £758,000 from the BBSRC.
  • Project to tackle most common food poisoning bacteria 12 September 2011 Twelve projects, bringing together researchers from across disciplines, will study Campylobacter in the food chain, from field to plate. One of the projects, led by the University’s School of Veterinary Sciences, will look at the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the diet of chickens.
  • Triple success for social science researchers 21 October 2011 Three academics at the University of Bristol have received accolades from the Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of their significant contributions to the field.
  • Neuroscience meets real-life medicine 8 September 2011 Four members of Bristol Neuroscience (BN) have won Translational Neuroscience Research Fellowships (TNRFs), which will enable them to dedicate up to six months to developing translational neuroscience research – the two-way interaction between fundamental research and life beyond the laboratory bench.
  • Marianne Thoresen wins inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Award 7 July 2011 Marianne Thoresen, Professor of Neonatal Neuroscience in the School of Clinical Sciences, has won the inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Award for her ground-breaking research into cooling the injured brains of newborn babies.
  • Researcher inspired by life in a glass house awarded £1.3 million 20 October 2011 A scientist at the University of Bristol has been awarded £1.3 million to unlock the secrets of miniscule algae cells that have the remarkable ability to produce silica – the fundamental constituent of glass. It is hoped the findings from the research could lead to the next generation of medical imaging tools.
  • University of Bristol student named best UK science blogger 27 November 2012 A PhD student from the University of Bristol has been named the joint winner of a national competition to honour the best science bloggers in the country. Suzi Gage, whose Sifting the Evidence blog focuses on research and ideas in the field of epidemiology and public health, won the 2012 UK Science Blog Prize alongside renowned pharmacologist Professor David Colquhoun.
  • Young researcher wins Europe-wide prize for PhD thesis 15 July 2011 Dr Georg Fuchsbauer, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computer Science, has won an award from the European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) for his recent PhD thesis.
  • National award for South West engineering collaboration 26 November 2012 A strong partnership between the University of Bristol and a thriving helicopter equipment company has won a top national award for its collaborative work, which led to the development of world-leading technology.
