Interventions for reducing hepatitis C infection in people who inject drugs

The first global review to quantify the impact of needle syringe programmes (NSP) and opioid substitution treatment (OST) in reducing the risk of becoming infected with the hepatitis C virus is published in Cochrane Library Drug and Alcohol Review Group and the journal Addiction. The study, has implications for millions of people who are 'at risk' from infection.

New discovery could reverse tissue damage caused by heart attacks

A new discovery by University of Bristol scientists helps to explain how cells which surround blood vessels, called pericytes, stimulate new blood vessels to grow with the hormone ‘leptin’ playing a key role. Leptin is produced by fat cells which helps to regulate energy balance in the body by inhibiting the appetite. This study, described in Scientific Reports, may have important implications for the treatment of heart attacks and also for cancer, the two main killers in the UK.

Now you can levitate liquids and insects at home

Levitation techniques are no longer confined to the laboratory thanks to University of Bristol engineers who have developed an easier way for suspending matter in mid-air by developing a 3D-printed acoustic levitator. This new technique, published in Review of Scientific Instruments, could be applied to a range of applications, including blood tests.

Downing Street recognition for Parkinson's researcher

Dr Emily Henderson, a University of Bristol Honorary Consultant Senior Lecturer, and Consultant at the Royal United Hospitals in Bath, met the Prime Minister Theresa May at a Downing Street reception yesterday [30 October] in recognition of her research into Parkinson's, and to mark the 200-year anniversary since James Parkinson first described the condition.

Making innovations in surgery safer

A study to help surgical innovations be developed more safely and efficiently has published a 'core outcome set' for new surgical techniques and devices in the Annals of Surgery. The COHESIVE study, led by National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded researchers at the University of Bristol, devised the set through a robust process involving patients, surgeons and other health professionals.
